Final Approved Course Description

Photography Studio 
6 Credits
"City As Studio: Florence, Italy" 
Faculty: Professor Stan Strembicki

You will use one of the most vibrant European art metropolis as both a subject and a sounding board for image making. The traditions of documentary and street photography will be our primary guide. Through on site group trips in and around Florence as well as day trips to Siena, Lucca, Pisa and other cites in Tuscany, you will develop a concise and well reasoned portfolio of images. Students will carry out research for project-based work in museums, churches, piazzas and markets of Florence and will be supported by lectures and technical demonstrations. Course is open to students of all levels and disciplines, students need to supply their own camera and support systems. You may employ either analogue or digital media; an on site darkroom will be available for film processing and printing. No prerequisites, camera required. Course counts toward the photography minor, limited to 12 students.

Important Class Dates:

Students arrive Florence: May 19
Students arrive/travel to Elba: May 20
Elba language class: May 20-28
Students return to Florence and move into apartments: May 28
Florence orientation: May 29-June 3
Photo class begins: June 4th 9 am
First Photo class adventure: June 4th 1pm
Last day of Florence program classes: July 30
Students move out of apartments and return to USA: July 31

The Picture is Becoming Clear

I was able to meet with Courtney Cushard today, the coordinator of the study abroad program and we worked out some of the dates for the Florence summer 2018 class. This year its a package deal for 10 credits, 6 studio in photo, 3 art history and 1 Italian language. The class starts off with a one week intensive language program on the Isle of Elba May 20-28, then onto Florence on the 28th for orientation May 29-June 3 and classes will begin June 4th.

It' a Done Deal, City As Studio-Florence 2018

The contract has been signed and now I can officially say that in June-July 2018 I will be teaching a 6 credit photography class in Florence, Italy. The class is titled "City as Studio-Florence 2018"

A unique photography course that uses one of the most vibrant European art metropolis as both a subject and a sounding board for image making.  The traditions of documentary and street photography will be our primary guide. Daily on site group trips in and around Florence as well as day trips to Siena, Lucca, Pisa and other cites in Tuscany. Emphasis on developing a portfolio of images that reflect a more concise, well reasoned portfolio.  Florence, a city often described as an open-air museum, will be the base for our investigations. Students will carry out research for project-based work in museums, churches, piazzas and markets of Florence and will be supported by lectures and technical demonstrations.


This course is open to students of all levels and disciplines, students need to supply their own camera and support systems. Students may employ either analogue or digital media during the class and an on site darkroom will be available for film processing and printing.

I'm NOT going to Paris, really this time...

Sometimes plans change and for us, the plan to spend two months in Paris this summer just did not work out for us.

BUT, there are plans for Italy in the summer of 2018 so stay tunes international travelers !
